1. Question: The Width and Height do not show for me in the superview, I just have ---, no matter what area I have selected.

Answer: You need to turn this on from the settings menu. Select "Show width/height". Then when you click the screen refresh button (next to the zoom buttons) it will show the used area of the chart. On slower machines in particular and with larger designs, having this turned on may affect the speed of operation since the whole design needs to be scanned after each drawing operation to see if it affected the figures.

The next update will change the way this works and also the used colour indicators in the palette. Currently the width and height are updated when the mouse is released after a drawing operation. The used colour indicators are updated only when redrawing the entire design (although if you add a stitch then that marker is turned on immediately). The next update will be the first one that uses multiple concurrent program threads which will allow continual checking and updating to be done in background while maintaining main program speed. If your machine has dual or quad core processors then these tasks can make use of the multiple processors. The result is that the width, height and colour markers are updated in a fraction of a second - as soon as you delete the last stitch of a colour in the design, the used colour marker for that colour is deleted.

Also in the next update, the flash current colour should work on all machines.

I am still testing but I suspect if you only have a single core processor then having realtime information updates and flashing colours at the same time may be too much for it. You will be able to turn on/off the updates from the settings menu.

2. Question: I have many blackwork motifs that I would like to be able to add to the browser and use as fills. I have tried creating my own motif and saving it as blackwork motif in the location where I save all of my own designs (separate from the program's directory). I have then copied the motif file into the blackwork motif directory contained within the Cross Stitch Pro program directory. The motif does indeed show up in the motif browser but the color is not black (the saved original was black). When used as a fill to backstitch, it patterns itself correctly once and does not complete the fill. Please advise as to the proper way to accomplish this task.

Answer: Are you using the save on the motif menu ? The correct way to save for blackwork is to select an area around the shape you are saving then go to the motif menu and choose "Save area as blackwork".

The area that you select is used to determine the spacing between the repeats. So if you allow 1 stitch space all around, there will be one stitch between each repeat of the shape. If you simply save a design from the File menu then the repeat distance will be equal to the canvas size and the design will not have the special treatment for colours needed for motifs.

Let me know if that doesn't explain the problem. You can always upload your motif here or in a private message if you want me to take a look.

3. Question: Thank you for the information. I was saving the file as both a motif and blackwork motif. I have been saving with a space all around and experienced the repeat problem. I had also saved the design in the file menu and that did not work correctly for me either. It is not easy to select just the stitches. I usually end up with blanks on one side or the other. I suppose the select all command would be the best option assuming that I do not have anything else on the canvas at the time. I use a Wacom graphics tablet and there seams to be a problem with it's interface when selecting stitches. I appear to get a better selection if I begin at the lower right corner of the design and move diagonally up to the upper left corner.

When I save a motif to blackwork, even though the motif was created in the color black, it ends up being white in the browser window. Any idea what I'm doing wrong there?

I will probably send on a blackwork motif in the near future for you to see and tell me what I am doing wrong.

Answer: Draw your design anywhere on a blank canvas. Now go to Canvas menu and select "Expand/Crop size". Click on the "Set to used area buton". If you want a blank space between repeats, set the margin to the correct number of stitches. Click OK to get a design of the right size. Now choose "Select All" from the area menu and finally "Save Area as blackwork" from the motif menu.

This way you do not have to draw the area selection with your tablet.

Does the motif show white only in the preview or also when you use it to fill ?

4. Question: I just upgraded to the Platinum version and find the changes very pleasing. I enjoy using the blackwork fill function. Is there any way to draw a circle in backstitches only? Presently, I'm doing 4 steps: draw circle in cross stiches; auto smooth; auto backstitch outline and then delete cross stitches. Only problem is that you are left with a double border of backstitches created when using the auto stitch outline function. It would be much easier to simply draw the circle in backstitches at the beginning. Did I miss reading how to do this in the online help?

Answer: There is no special tool for backstitch circles but you can store a motif to do it. Your method of outlining a circle is good but you should have used the filled circle so that the outlining could only make a single line of backstitches.

Draw a filled circle of cross stitches, select the area and use auto outline to create the backstitch. Now use delete - cross stitches on the area menu to leave just the backstitch. Select the area containing the backstitch plus a few stitches extra all around. Now go to motif menu and save area as motif.

Now to draw a circle you can just drag the motif from the motif browser ensuring the "Object" box is checked. Now use the object select tool (hand icon) to move and resize to your requirements. When you have it looking right, you can convert the object to stitches using a right mouse click and selecting "Modify".

The reason we create the motif slightly larger than the circle is to prevent stitches on the edge from being removed due to rounding errors when the motif is scaled down.

5. Question: I was just curious about taking a photo and adding it to XSplat, if i had an A4 image for example in my graphics package and exported it, with a transparent background and then imported it into xsplat i notice, that the white background is replaced with white thread, i know i can, then choose to remove the white thread so i can see the white canvas as, a replacement but is there a better way to do this?

Answer: Yes there is a slightly easier way:

Set the background colour of your blank cross stitch design to the colour of the background in your graphics file (RGB = 255,255,255 if its pure white). You can do this by double clicking on the cross stitch palette labelled 'B' and setting the red, green and blue sliders at the bottom of the screen.

Import the file and check the box on the import dialog "Use background colour in matching".

Any pixel in your graphics file that matches the colour you set for the background colour will not have a stitch.

At the current time the program does not use the transparent colour set in your graphics file to set the background palette colour automatically. It is likely this will happen in a future update - then you would be able to just import and have it leave out the stitches for the background automatically.

6. Question: It would be useful for me to be able to print the thread lengths pages using my printer margins. Currently there is quite a large gap all around and I would like to use the further space that I have available.

It would also be useful, if possible, to be able to see how many pages it is going to be on before printing so I can change the font to a smaller one to avoid having just one or two threads on another page.

Answer: On the next update, I will add a page properties button where you can set margins and a print preview button. I will also show page breaks in the editor. Should be in the next couple of days.
